When you think of interior design, you may not immediately connect it to the entertainment industry. However, my background as a production designer in Hollywood has given me a unique perspective on design that sets me apart from other interior designers in the industry. In this blog, I want to share with you how my experience in Hollywood has influenced my design philosophy and how it can benefit your high-end residential or commercial design project.
My first opportunity in architectural interior design came from actor Gerard Butler, who asked me to design his New York City loft. At the time, I was a production designer in the entertainment industry and had never worked on a residential project before. However, I quickly found that many of the skills I had developed in Hollywood were directly transferable to interior design
A great film is about a great story and a great script. As a production designer, my job was to bring that story to life with objects, textures, and colors. I would break down every nuance on every page and think about how to visually communicate the subtext. This philosophy translated perfectly to residential and commercial design. In both cases, the space needs to tell a story, evoke a mood, and transport the viewer to a different time or place.
One of the most important things I learned as a production designer was the art of attention to detail. When creating a movie set, every detail must be carefully considered in order to transport the viewer to a specific time and place. This philosophy also applies to high-end interior design. Clients who come to me for custom design services are looking for a space that is truly immersive, one that has an emotional and spiritual connection to them. I call this “recycling the past.” I use authentic vintage antiques and surround them with my custom-designed architectural features. The result is a space that looks and feels authentic, as if it has a history.
Gerard Butler’s loft was a perfect example of how attention to detail can be recognized by both clients and peers. I was rewarded with the cover of Architectural Digest for my efforts. From that point on, I knew that my experience in the entertainment industry could be a valuable asset in the world of high-end residential and commercial design.
One of the things I love most about designing for the entertainment industry is that I get to work with a wide variety of styles and time periods. From period dramas to science fiction, I’ve designed it all. This has given me a broad perspective on design and a deep appreciation for different styles and eras. When working with clients on their residential or commercial design projects, I bring this perspective to the table. Whether they are looking for a classic Art Deco look or a more modern aesthetic, I have the experience and knowledge to create a space that meets their needs and exceeds their expectations.
Another important skill I developed in the entertainment industry is the ability to work under tight deadlines and within a specific budget. Film and television productions operate on tight schedules and budgets, and there is no room for error. I bring this same level of efficiency and precision to my interior design projects. My clients know that they can count on me to deliver a beautiful, functional space on time and on budget.
In addition to my experience in the entertainment industry, I have a background in custom design. I specialize in custom builds which include lighting, furniture, ceilings, floors, plaster walls, wallpaper murals, and moldings. This allows me to create truly one-of-a-kind designs that are tailored to each client’s individual needs and tastes. Whether they are looking for a cozy family room or a luxurious restaurant space, I have the skills and experience to create a space that is both functional and beautiful.
I learned to think about design from the perspective of the end user. How does the space make them feel? How do the colors and textures impact their emotions? As a production designer, I learned to focus on the details, the little things that might not be noticed individually, but together create a complete picture. This attention to detail has carried over to my interior design work. Every aspect of the space is thoughtfully considered, from the lighting to the flooring to the wall art. I believe that it is this attention to detail that sets me apart from other interior designers.
Another way that my background in the entertainment industry informs my design philosophy is through my focus on storytelling. In film and television, a production designer’s job is to help tell the story visually. We use set design, lighting, and props to create a specific mood and atmosphere that enhances the narrative. In my interior design work, I approach each project as if I am telling a story. I consider the client’s wants and needs, their lifestyle, and their personal style. From there, I create a space that tells their unique story.
One example of how I use storytelling in my design work is through the use of vintage and antique pieces. I believe that every object has a story to tell, and I love incorporating pieces with history into my designs. These pieces add character and depth to a space, and they help to create a sense of timelessness. Whether it’s an antique rug or a vintage light fixture, these pieces help to ground a space and make it feel more lived in.
In addition to storytelling, I also believe in the importance of function in design. A space should not only look beautiful but should also serve its intended purpose. In my years as a production designer, I learned to create sets that were both visually stunning and practical for filming. This skill has carried over into my interior design work. I work closely with my clients to understand how they will be using their space and what their specific needs are. From there, I create a design that is not only beautiful but also functional.
One example of how I incorporate function into my designs is through my use of custom furniture. In my years as a production designer, I often had to create custom furniture pieces for specific sets. This experience gave me an appreciation for the value of custom pieces, and I now incorporate custom furniture into many of my interior design projects. Custom pieces not only add a unique element to a space but can also be designed to fit specific needs and solve design challenges.
In conclusion, my background in the entertainment industry has shaped my approach to interior design in numerous ways. From my attention to detail to my focus on storytelling and function, each aspect of my design philosophy is informed by my years as a production designer. I believe that it is this unique perspective that sets me apart from other interior designers and allows me to create immersive and unforgettable spaces for my clients.
